Global tech news

I’ve started a regular global technology news writing slot for Future Publishing. The the last two months, I’ve been providing news and insight for 5Gradar.

5G is a ground-breaking technology that is enabling innovative applications across a breadth of sectors from agriculture to security – there’s so much to report on, I’m really enjoying it.

I’m currently averaging two stories a day for 5Gradar, so I certainly won’t post them all here, but here are a few examples:

Finland’s Elisa demos remote-controlled 5G tractors – and more – at its new lab – read it here.

5G robots are battling the coronavirus in China – read it here.

Trump tries to curry favour with India over 5G – read it here.

Launching Inspired Bride magazine

Issue 1 of Inspired Bride magazine hits the shops today. This new national wedding magazine is being stocked in WH Smith and a selection of independent retailers, priced at £3.95, with an initial print run of 10,000. The idea for Inspired Bride came about when I was planning my own wedding back in 2013 – I found lots of creative loveliness online but what I really wanted was a monthly magazine (sorry internet, but you can’t compete with the tactile permanence of print) to accompany me on my planning journey – one that celebrated uniqueness, was brimming with creativity and ultimately inspired me to go the extra mile for my big day. Fast-forward two years and a leap of faith by local publisher One Media and here we are!

I’ve launched the whole magazine from scratched with Art Editor, Peter Frost and part-time sub editor, Sally Newell. It’s been a very heavy workload but I’m very proud of the magazine and it’s been a completely different experience heading up at launch within a small company, rather than an already successful, established publishing house.

Inspired Bride’s feature material is intelligent, our photoshoots are breathtaking, our DIY tutorials are unbelievably cool and the real weddings we select span pretty much every style you can imagine and are guaranteed to wow. The magazine, which carries the strapline of ‘for weddings less ordinary’ is all about sparking readers’ creativity and  leaving them feeling energized and ready to enjoy their planning.

Last month I took on a new client; Millpond Children’s Sleep Clinic, who offer sleep training programmes for children and also train healthcare professions. Millpond is a high profile organisation and the team can be seen everywhere from the TV and national press, starring in programs such as, “My Child Won’t Sleep!” to training staff in the NHS. I’ll be heading up the PR and marketing arm on an ongoing freelance basis. Check out the Millpond Children’s Sleep Clinic website here.

I’m pleased to announce I’ve recently acquired two new clients: Ilex Press and Hungry Eye Magazine.

The first edition of iPad for Photographers
The 1st Edition of iPad for Photographers

Ilex Press is a leading book publisher who exists to address the new creative needs which are constantly being unveiled by the fast moving pace of the modern media, digital technology and popular culture. I’ve been commissioned to write the 2nd Edition of iPad For Photographers, which is very exciting.

The iPad is fast becoming the ultimate photographer s accessory, offering a high-quality = display screen, picture storage space, and an image-manipulation tool all in one powerful, portable package. In the book I’ll explain how this powerful accessory can revolutionise the way that photographers work, with topics including  photo-editing applications,  photo-sharing and display programs and useful tethered-shooting capabilities. I’ve already started work on the book, which is my first, and I’ll be sure to blog when it goes to press.

Hungry Eye Magazine is a high-end monthly magazine which brings the world of professional photography and filmmaking to the professional, the advanced, the inquisitive and the passionate. My first feature for Hungry Eye explores the role of the wedding photographer and the genres reputation within the image-making industry – I’ll blog when it publishes. On the back of this I’ve been given more juicy commissions and look forward to a lasting relationship with the magazine. Check out Hungry Eye on the web here.

Lecturing at UCP Marjon

I’ve just completed my first month at University College Marjon, Plymouth, where I’ve been a part-time guest lecturer, across their Media and Journalism courses. It’s been a steep learning curve – getting to grips with academia again, public speaking and changing my mind set from media creator to media teacher, but I’ve certainly enjoyed the challenge and the added variety to my working week. The seminar I’m taking this week is on review writing and next week’s lecture is on travel writing, then I’m moving on to teach some basic photography and image editing skills. I hope to be asked back next term too.

About Marjon
In the Sunday Times University Guide, UCP Marjon ranked 4th for Teaching Excellence (ahead of Oxford University) and are ranked 3rd overall amongst university colleges. Ofsted have rated their Primary Teacher Training as ‘Outstanding’. The university college offer a great range of courses from Foundation Degrees & Progression Courses to Honours Degrees and Postgraduate study. UCP Marjon has built a reputation for being ‘small and friendly’. With around 3500 students, the class sizes are small, which means tutors and fellow students get to know each other, but the institution is large enough to provide excellent facilities and social activities.
