My latest interview, published as part of my biweekly series for Autographer sees me interview inspirational street photographer Heather Buckley, who, despite the twist in genre has just been crowned Royal Horticultural Society Photographer of the Year 2014. Feb 2014 sees me embark on a new bi-weekly photographic series for Autographer. My first instalment is an interview with photojournalist Lee Thompson, who was at the Winter Olympics in Sochi when I spoke to him. In this eye-opening interview Lee tells me about photographing the body of Colonel Gaddafi in a supermarket fridge, having his life threatened and feelings of guilt. Last month I had the pleasure of heading to Barrow Gurney in Somerset to meet furniture designer Tom Rowan and interview him for Somerset Life magazine. Tom’s work will blow you away: inspired by passions, memories and dreams and fuelled by a passion for speed and movement, his furniture bridges that important gap between art and function. In my latest feature for Autographer, I get together with nine other photography experts and get them to share their top tips for doing well in competitions.
Lee Thompson, freelance editorial photographer shared this tip: “Don’t over edit. If you need to edit a picture too much, it’s not a very good picture to start with! There is nothing worse than a heavily photoshopped picture. Competition judges are really clamping down on over edited images after last year’s World Press winning picture came under some controversy by several picture forensic experts, who said the picture had been heavily altered.”

Last month I took on a new client; Millpond Children’s Sleep Clinic, who offer sleep training programmes for children and also train healthcare professions. Millpond is a high profile organisation and the team can be seen everywhere from the TV and national press, starring in programs such as, “My Child Won’t Sleep!” to training staff in the NHS. Here’s my tip:
Try shooting wide to show the atmosphere of a place and the whole picture instead of isolating details.
Shooting from a distance, and also from a high vantage point, gives the viewer a real taste of the city of Havana.

The Queen has been making Christmas Day broadcasts since the death of her father, King George VI, in February 1952. As well as following a religious framework, her address always reflects the events of the past year and her own experiences. And, as well as being part of the British and Commonwealth heritage, how the message is delivered shows the evolution of broadcast technology.
